HE Interior Minister discusses security cooperation during US Visit

MOI:

The Interior Minister, His Excellency Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, this week conducted an official visit to the United States, during which he met a number of officials from the US’ executive and legislative authorities.

His Excellency’s meetings included bilateral discussions with the Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly, Acting Director of the Federal Investigation Bureau, Mr Andrew McCabe, and a number of security officials in the US administration.

During the official visit, His Excellency praised the historic and strategic relations that exist between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States, expressing appreciation towards the mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries’ security authorities.

The Minister of Interior provided briefings on the sustained Iranian interference that Bahrain and countries within the region continue to affected by. His Excellency noted the wide-ranging intelligence materials that evidence Iran’s support to extremist and sectarian cells, which highlight the state’s financial and logistical backing to such groups. The available evidence, the Minister emphasised, includes large amounts of terror-related materials seized in a number of raids in Bahrain.

His Excellency outlined the steps taken by the Interior Ministry to modernise its security procedures and to reinforce security cooperation and the exchange of expertise across the countries’ counter-terrorism departments. Cooperation across cyber-security, combating cross-border organised crime, and the development of forensic expertise were also discussed.

The Interior Minister’s and the Secretary of Homeland Security’s discussion also focused on the MoU signed between the two departments in 2007, which established further collaboration to address the ever-evolving security challenges across the region. The US officials welcomed the support and facilities provided by the Kingdom of Bahrain in this regard. The meetings were attended by the accompanied delegation

His Excellency the Interior Minister also met a number of senior legislative figures during his visit, including the House Speaker and Congressman, Paul Ryan; Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Mr Ed Royce; Chairman of the Defense Committee,

Senator John McCain; Chairman of the Economic Committee, Senator James Rich; and Chairman of the National Security Commission, Senator Michael McCall. His Excellency welcomed the support voiced during these meetings towards Bahrain’s collaboration with the US, notably through the Kingdom’s hosting of the Fifth Fleet.

They also affirmed their support to Bahrain in its steps to confront the Iranian threat and hegemony which, they said, needed to be addressed through various means. The meetings were also attended by Bahrain Ambassador to the US His Excellency Shaikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa.
