Public Security Chief chairs disaster management panel meet

Chief of Public Security Major-General Tariq Al Hassan chaired the extraordinary meeting of the National Disaster Management Committee on Tuesday.

The meeting was part of the directives of His Excellency the Interior Minister and Chairman of the Civil Defence Council to review the security and preparedness concerning the dangerous regional developments that might affect security and stability. Representatives of ministries and the authorities concerned also attended the meeting.

The meeting aimed to evaluate the preparedness of all bodies concerned in cooperation with the private sector to deal with the emerging regional situations and take the required steps within the committee’s framework to protect the people, institutions and national achievements against all threats.

He affirmed the importance of ensuring the national emergency plan was ready to tackle all unusual situations and there was capability to quickly recover from any incident through advance plans which were reviewed, updated and developed continuously. It also called for national exercises to improve capabilities and efficiency of the organisations concerned to deal with crises and disasters.  

The committee was briefed on the levels of preparedness and the plans implemented by various organisations. It ensured the availability of sufficient stocks of food, water and medicines by all ministries and the organisations concerned, and the necessary mechanisms and preparedness to deal with any emergency. The plans and alternatives and the requirements to protect the environment were highlighted at the meeting.

The Chief said the committee would look into any changes and the availability of the required services and work to prepare alternative plans in case there were any issues in the implementation of the main plans. There were also plans to create awareness in the public in various places about general safety instructions.

The Chief said the National Disaster Management Centre worked to follow up on the latest developments and coordinated the efforts to upgrade the preparedness level at the Operations Directorate and the Civil Defence centres to receive cases and offer assistance to the people.
